format a laptop

Hi my question is if I bought a laptop and ever had to format it how is it done because I believe they do not come with an XP installstion disk

I have an Acer. It didn't come with the XP Installation disks although it does have a recovery partition on the hard drive full of drivers and recoverey software. So whatever you do, do not format this partition or at least back it up before hand. Your laptop manufacturer should supply some software or information on how to back/restore your system.
