Transposing a formula in excel

I have just got a new PC, with MS Excel on it. For some reason, if I put a formula on a cell, and use the little tag at the bottom right of the cell to copy the formula all the way down the column, all that is copied is the number that was in the original cell, not the formula. I suspect it's just a setting that needs changed, but have no idea which one. Can anyone give me a pointer? This does not happen in the Excel on my other computer.

What is the formula ?

Yes, it sounds as if you are on 'Manual Calculation'

Go to Tools / Options / Calculation and change it to 'Automatic'
Did that work AllYourBase ?

or do we have to think of another solution?
