Blank media player when viewed on a tv screen

When i connect my hp pavilion laptop to my tv ( samsung LE32) via a vga cable and try and play dvd and media files the actual video picture is black on the tv but playing fine on the laptop, which is weird because otherwise the tv is working fine as a secondary screen.
Any help would be much appreciated
