How do I fix a faulty USB connection...

I have just replaced a HP 1220c (failing print quality) for a used epson 1290, the quality of the A3 prints is superb but the speed is a nighmare ....... approx 30/40 mins per A3!
I am using a parallel connection as the USB connection has a fault & wont run using this. Could this be why the printer is running so slow & if so is repairing the USB a do it yourself job? I do have an old epson 1270 I could get parts from.

No you definitely can't repair it yourself. They're very cheap anyway so it's not worth it.

Your best bet is to probably buy a new USB PCI card if you have a spare slot:

you can buy a pci card that goes in the inside slots of your pc and will give you any number of usb ports to use. they are not even difficult to install yourself. check out here for a card

Sorry, I should of made the problem more clear... the USB fault is located at the printer end & not the pc.

looking at specs for that printer you dont seem to have much choice other than do what your doing. is the port actually damaged or could it be a software problem eg driver not up to date etc

I actually knew about the problem when I purchased the printer but I never expected it to have such a drastic effect on the printing speed. The spare 1270 I have is more or less an identical printer & I was hoping I could exchange the USB connection.

I thnk I have the latest drivers installed .. (I'm a bit lost once I get beyond the key board :) Is there a simple way of double checking?

to find your driver version :-
select start - settings - printers and faxes . right click on your printer and select properties then choose version

this link takes you to the latest driver for your printer choose your operating system then download and run the file.
