Basically just go for the best-specced laptop possible. IBM, Toshiba, Acer and Sony make some great laptops. Many are happy with Dell laptops too. It's just a case of shopping round.
If it's for 2D CAD like AutoCAD, then max out your budget on one of fo3nix's suggestions and you can't go too far wrong. I'd also add HP to the list though they tend to be more pricey.

If you're looking at hardcore 3D solid modelling like Pro/E, SolidWorks or UG, then you'll need to spend a lot more cash. Look at a Dell Precision M65 for an idea, they start at just under a grand.

Realistically, you can run 3D modellers on your 600 laptop and it'll be fine on fairly simple stuff, but when the complexity cranks up, you'll be frustrated by the time it takes to save files and rotate models etc.
