dvd rom drive and writer not auto playing

my dvd rom drive and writer are not auto playing. i have to explore in my computer to access dvd/cd's
also when i eject a disc from either they still show in the drive even if i put in a different disc.the only way to play a new disc is to restart.
it seems like explorer is having trouble accessing the drives.
any ideas what the problem is.

go to my computer, right click the drive you want to auto play, select properties and click the autoplay tab.

should have said the auto play tab is ticked which makes me think my drives might be on the way out.
