Reflex actions and newborn feeding?

Does anyone know the psychology and/or biology behind the root and suck reflexes of newborn babies?

They are both innate reflexes - i.e. they are not learnt but something all newborns do from birth. As both reflexes are associated with breastfeeding, It would be reasonable to suppose that they have evolved by giving infants who did have this reflex a better chance at feeding than tose who did not automatically move towards or suck a proffered nipple.
It maybe a reflex but dear god does it hurt when they are learning how to do it!!!!!!!!!!!
