Is it ok to disc fragment in "safe mode" ? will this help to overcome the problem i am having on PC freezing ? I'm doing it now

Doing a defrag will make no difference to your problem, defrag re-orders your files to make them use space most efficiently. It should not be the memory as XP manages its memory efficiently automatically anyway.

Try using system restore to go back to a previous system condition and see if this solves the problem, note that anything you installed after the restore point will need to be re-installed after you do this.

Sounds a bit like a problem I had a couple of years ago.

Do you use a spyware program?

Try one ,it might work.

I had a problem like this when the inside of the PC case was full of dust and dirt.

Because of the dirt the fans were not working very well and the components were getting too hot.

If the PC is a couple of years old try taking the cover off and blowing out the dust with a hair dryer, or sucking it out with a vacuum cleaner (or both).

Be careful not to touch any PC parts with anything metal.
