What a fantastic programme........I'd recommend any parent of young children to watch this....and expectant parents too, NoM... ;-)
The before and after results are fascinating and such a joy to see the difference it's made to the children....so much so that the head is now introducing the teaching methods tried into all classes.....would that all schools would consider this.....
If you can watch part two on catch-up have a look......it's interesting and a pleasure..... :-)
They did, Mamya and it pleased me to see the changes in the children....the increase in the confidence of the girls and the improved behaviour of the boys in class.....that's so important...
And those little girls who can now do things they thought they couldn't....what a great start to their education....future scientists!!!
A follow up would be very interesting, Dave.......both to see the children and the parents who took part....x
I've had a another look at the key bits of this - it was quite a lot to take in at a first sitting.
Although a bit dressed up for 'entertainment', it looks to have the legs for some serious research into the effect that (often unconscious) gender conditioning and expectation from parents, schools and society in general has on young children and their life ambitions.
It also had some good ideas on how the negative effects of conditioning on both boys and girls can be reduced and positive reinforcement of equality of aspiration can be given.
A thoroughly good programme that I recommend to everyone.
A less contentious subtitle would have been "Can our kids be freed from biased expectations based on their gender" - but I accept that that is rather a mouthful and less 'sexy' in media terms.
I hope you saw the ending, Dave....the comments by Masie and Riley....and their parents.....
Also the little girl who could now read aloud in class......to be making small changes that can give these children this confidence for the future is fantastic......x
FM....You don't understand that changing or expanding on what you're led to believe your gender can do....to not be limited by stereotypes? ....Really!.....That is how you'd bring up your children?!!... :-)
