There's something at the bottom of this one about incognito mode

I've had a look at that, Tuvok. Thank you. I'll have a go tomorrow. Too tired now but thanks anyway.

One thing I want to know is how can I be sure that the technician has no longer got control of my computer. He didn't seem to 'sign off' or let me know that he had finished his job.
You've almost certainly got at least one other browser on your computer, simply because Internet Explorer will be there by default.

Open Internet Explorer and see if you can browse the web normally. If you can, close Internet Explorer (and Chrome, if you had it open). Uninstall Chrome (via Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features). RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. Then download and reinstall Chrome from here:

NB: Remember to note down any extensions that you want to keep, as you'll need to reinstall them. Also (if Chrome will allow you to do it), remember to export your Bookmarks file first. (Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager > Organise > Export Bookmarks). Once you've re-installed Chrome you can then import them back again. (Menu > Import Bookmarks & Settings > Bookmarks HTML File > Choose File > Done).

Thank you, too Chris. I'll have a go at that in the morning. Seems like a long job!
Uninstall Chrome and download/reinstall is one option:- http://www.wikihow.com/Reinstall-Google-Chrome

Before that you could also try making a new user profile as follows:-

Step 1
Close the Chrome browser, and then press "Windows Icon and E" together on the keyboard to launch Windows File Explorer.

Step 2
Enter (or copy and paste) the following text:-

"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\" (without quotes) into the address bar at the top of the file explorer window.

Step 3
Find the folder named "Default" in the window that opens, right-click the folder and select "Rename." Name the folder "Backup Default" (without quotes).

Step 4
Launch Chrome and try to loading a problem Web page again.
If I were you Tilly, I would scrub Google and download Firefox.

Hans.
