The Word file may have been set to 'read only'. If so (before opening it), right-click on its icon and select 'Properties'. Remove the tick next to 'Read-only', click 'Apply' and 'OK'. You'll then be able to access the file with both 'read' and 'write' privileges.
Question Author
when i right click on the icon i dont get properties, just a drop down meñeu with other things such as view image and copy image.
That reads as if you're trying to do it directly from an email. Save the file to your hard drive first and then right-click on its icon from there to access 'Properties'.
Question Author
tried the right click on properties, still no difference, still get the read only message at the top of the file.
As Chris says, save to your drive first.

Perhaps the file attribute is set to read only. What does it say in the attribute column when you look at the file using Explorer ? (Or try properties from there.)
Question Author
og, i did save the file to my hard drive. i looked at attributes, and theres read only and hidden along side it, both are unticked.
Hmm difficult.

Can you open it, "save as", then open the new save, fresh again, and see if that works ?
Question Author
Tried that og without any joy. Is my pc a touch limited? its a windows 7, 32bit.
