Can you buy an adapter to change a USB 3 outlet down to a USB 2?

And if so, are there any associated problems in doing so?

Yes you can and there aren't any issues as far as I know.
You shouldn't need an adapter. A USB2 device should work normally when connected to a USB3 port. (A USB3 device connected to a USB2 port should also work but at USB2 speed).
Sorry Chris I misread the OP :) I thought peachybabe was asking about adapters for splitting. I'll get my coat.
