are you on windows 8?
have you accidentally turned on the numpad?

a subset of the keys can act as the numpad that you'd find on a full keyboard http://www.northlite.net/ps/numpad.htm

windows 7, 32 bit, vista
I think you must be touching the trackpad as you type - try switching it whilst you type

trackpad? my girlfriend experiences the the same problem with my keypad, but never on her computer at work.
Laptops tend to have a touch sensitive pad under (i.e. nearer you) the keyboard for use as a mouse substitute. They are easily touched when typing and a B nuisance. Defies all common sense anyone thought them a good idea. Try to find in the manual how to disable it.
Try adjusting the key strike slow, go to control panel/keyboard.
piggynose.....Are you telling us that you are using two Operating Systems in the same Laptop.? Windows 7 and Vista are separate systems.
