My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

that sounds smashing, neti. Dubai will be lovely and warm but not blood-boiling.

I expect you'll be shooting up the Burj al-Arab and even going outside on the millionth floor? One jump will get you to the huge shopping mall at the bottom of it.

dum de dum...
We are having a private viewing of that hotel that she has arranged and also she has arranged a helicopter ride for Mr N. I'll be in the gold souk when that happens.
oh wow Neti! that's wonderful!
I put my decs up when I feel like it and put what I feel like. haven't had a big tree for some years now....loads of lights though.
Shoulder ok its osteoartritis. Lovely day here. Am dreading car's mot tomorrow. Still wishing and hoping Mr N will do it.
Yay success
Mr N has agreed to taken the car for me, now I can relax.
Just made a nice fish pie.
Been a lovely day here. I was overdressed. Posted two Xmas parcels to UK and only 2 more to go, plus cards. Nice feeling.
Mr N is doing the car, has been gone 2 hrs now. Glad it wasn't Me!
Sis went home today so its a bit quiet here. Weather hasn't been as bad as forecast but its still a bit rattley here. I have been black friday shopping and found cheap red plaid/check counterpanes to cover the sofas and curtains to match. My everyday curtains are grey which I like but it will be nice to go a bit winter cosy for a change.
Car passed no problem but didn't envision any. The hardest bit apparently was checking into the office and paying into a machine. Mr N got confused.
Woofy those throws and curtains sound just up my street.
How is everyone today?

OH now has a burnt hand courtesy of a saucepan just out of the oven. Just as well neither of us has to get an MOT, we'd be taken off the road pronto.

Ah well, been to see a really nice Modigliani exhibition and a great performance of Five Guys Named Moe today, tomorrow it's a doctor's appointment and then we visit the newly unveiled Temple of Mithras. That should be enough activity till Christmas at least.
You're late Jno!
I've been up for 2hr 20 mins with awful acid reflux. Thought I was going good to choke so have been sitting up in bed. Easing of now with 2 rennes and a omaprazol, will try to sleep propped up now. It really hurts and even hurt my ears this time.
Harummph! Have we decamped? I wanted sympathy!!!
Most Xmas.presents and cards posted. Just two more packets tomorrow and I'm done. Yippee. Lovely feeling!
Question Author
well, I decamped as promised to Roman London. Everyone else may have been scattered by the storm.
That's sounds interesting jno. what and where it is or do I have to Google? Are there big storms in UK then apart from Brexit? I feel guilty now as it's warm and sunny here.
Afternoon all...it's blowing your head off here but the sun's just appeared.
I wanted something to blow my head off on Tuesday, I had a migraine the size of an atomic explosion. Eight lousy hours...didn't eat until breakfast yesterday and spent the day with a 'hangover'. Tut. What with this miserable painful jaw and an overly sensitive tooth on the opposite side I think I'll look on ebay for a guillotine. More tutting.

Sorry your OH is wounded jno. I wouldn't pass an MOT either, I'd be towed off to the scrap yard.

Symathies for your reflux prob but at least you have some good news neti, that's a lovely surprise. Do they have a Primark there?

My decorations go up around the 10th Dec, only a small tree and a few lights on some twiddly sticks. I've got a self seeded yew in the front garden, it's about 4ft 6in now. How many lights do you think it would need? Tarquin would have to sort out the wiring business.
Robi, my outside lights have got batteries and a timer...like these.
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

loads of different ones on Amazon. I put them all over my front garden pots and fill my bench with little christmas trees with lights on
Ooh thanks woofy, I didn't think battery lights would be ok for outdoors, I'll have a look at the options.
Jno, give your OH a good talking to....you have worried enough recently about their antics.

I know, woofy, I was out driving round Golders Green at 11pm (the only late night chemist I could find within 10 miles) looking for some soothing cream, and got flashed at a traffic light on the way back. I can't see why, as I was stopping, but now I wonder if I missed another one somewhere in the storm. Not a great night all round, really.

The Mithraeum is excellent, though.

All free, at Bloomberg's expense. Nice to see big business behaving properly.
