Dell D600 - Wired Internet

This is odd, and I bet the answer is simple

My wife has a Dell D600 and it works like a charm - on wifi

But when I plug a cable into the RJ45 socket, NO lights come on at the network switch and IPCONFIG only shows a wifi network interface

It's almost as though the wired ethernet port hasn't been enabled somehow

What do I need to do to get her a wired connection?

Thanks

Perhaps a missing driver somewhere?

Go into the Device Manager to see if there are any of the dreaded exclamation marks shown against any devices.

No nasty exclamation marks, but actually no entry AT ALL for a wired ethernet adapter!

The RJ45 socket at the back does have an illuminated LED, so it's connected to SOMETHING

I checked the hardware setup screens, and the only thing I can see that might be relevant is "Enable LAN adapter" - which IS enabled

Any other advice even more gratefully received

PS Oh, and I "scanned for new hardware" - that didn't find anything new either

This is a long shot (but it's the sort of thing that sometimes works for me when Windows doesn't know what it's doing):

Try disabling the LAN adapter, restarting your computer and then enabling it again.
Question Author
Just doing that disable/enable thing right now

And you have a good point about the cable. I haven't actually used it with any other devices....

But that wouldn't explain why ipconfig doesn't see a wired LAN adapter
Question Author
OK, flipping the enable switch twice with reboots made no difference

How can I install drivers for the, apparent, network port?
All the driver set-up files for the Dell Latitude D600 are here
http://downloads.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/latitude-d600.html
but I'll leave it to you to work out which one you actually want!

Installed what looked like the best Broadcom drivers (not WLAN) and nothing has changed

Device manager still only shows a wireless LAN adapter

Can't be a cable problem

I'm now out of ideas :(
Windows isn't finding the device so doesn't know it needs a driver. I would be suspicious of the power actually getting to the LAN card.

Mwthyl - No, only the wireless LAN adapter is ever mentioned

Methyl - The wired ethernet adapter is not even IN device manager

So Windows thinks it doesn't exist

I only think the opposite is because there's an RJ45 jack with an illuminated LED
