Cut Shapes From Scanned Pages Using Picassa

I have scanned a couple of pages of copyright free drawings. These pages contain a number of different cartoon characters which I want to use individually. Therefore I need to be able to 'cut out the shape' of the drawing I want to enable me to paste it somewhere else. Can I do this with Picasa 3 or would AB'ers recommend some other (free) software please?

Try using GIMP. It's much more flexible that Picasa. I'd guess that my instructions for Photoshop here (good grief, 7 years ago!) would probably work in GIMP too:
