Which is best, a LED or a LCD monitor? Which is the latest

This question gets asked every few days, and the answer is always the same:

LED monitors are actually LCD monitors. The only difference is in the backlight. Non-LED monitors (and tellies) are lit by fluorescent lights, and LED ones are lit by (guess) LEDs.

In theory LEDs can provide better contrast, but a bottom-end LED is probably not as good as a top-end fluorescent. (For example, I have a Samsung fluorescent LCD monitor that is better in every respect than my Sharp LED monitor).

LEDs will also use a little less power and run a little cooler.

I have an old Proview 19" monitor which gave me great service. I damaged it and it has black streaks which are creeping across the screen like the PLAGUE SO ITS TIME TO CHANGE BEFORE i AM LOOKING AT A TOTAL BLACK SCREEN. Any suggestions for a new 21.5" monitor? AOC, ACER, LG, Samsung etc.

My PERSONAL preference would be a Samsung, but if you are going for a widescreen (16:9) and you currently have a 19" 4:3 screen, you should be aware that the new screen is going to be almost a full inch shorter than your old monitor.

To get a wide screen that's no shorter than your existing screen, you need to be looking at at least 25"

PERSONALLY I couldn't live with a 16:9 monitor :-)

I don't mind 16:9 as long as it's got a suitably high vertical resolution. I hate the trend for screens in laptops to be 1366*768, a vertical resolution of 768 is just not high enough and causes a lot of problems....900 vertical resolution is just about adequate and a 1080 is perfectly usable.

PC World are selling some super AOC LED monitors at present, at very cheap prices. If you have a branch nearby, check them out !
