The cursor on my new Acer laptop keeps jumping to around while I am typing.

As you can imagine, this is very annoying.

What could be the problem ? I'm sitting within six feet of the router and it's done it three times during this question ! Help !

Are you accidentally brushing on the touchpad?
You need to disable the touchpad and use an external mouse while you are typing. On my laptop, I hold down the function key and press the F6 key, but your Acer may be different - check the user manual to find out how to do this.
The function key will have a fingertip as the icon. Press CTRL and that key to disable the touchpad or keep your thumbs out of the way

Thank you, both.

I don't think I'm brushing the touch pad, although it is all much more sensitive than my desktop system.

I'll give your suggestion a try, Archie, but surely it shouldn't be necessary to plug in a mouse to enable the system to be used correctly. It's a mid-range Acer ( £600).

Keep the suggestions coming.

Cheers.
