I've noticed the past week that when I want to save things or change font or do anything which is along the top, it won't do it. Can anybody tell me what I have to do? I've lost some information due to this.

If I were you I would do a system restore, take your computer back to an earlier date to when the problems started. maybe a tec such as Chuck may have another solution.

and pray can I ask how to do a system restore? Me and computers just don't make 2
Most computer problems do NOT require something as drastic as a system restore, so don't do that unless no other replies are forthcoming.
Righto, click on start then on control panel and then look for back up and restore click on it and it will be more or less self explanatory from there on.
Drastic ?
More to the point, a system restore does exactly what it says on the tin, restores the "SYSTEM"... not applications! it wouldn't effect excell at all!

And yes, 95% of recommendations for a system restore on here are drastic.

The OP hasn't mentioned what version of Excel they are running so it's a bit hard to be precise, but the chances are the toolbar file has become corrupt, if that's the case all that's need is delete the toolbar config file and excel will create a new one next time it's opened, it should fix the problem but any changes made to the toolbars will be lost.
Or... simply uninstall excel and install it again is probably an easier fix for most people :)

Thanks for your replies. Have noticed there my documents are in 'accountancy' mode so switched from that to see if it makes any difference.
