I know the potential for getting a virus on your iPhone is very slim when downloading apps from the app store as all the apps are checked and approved before being made available.....that's fine I understand that.

What I want to know is, what's the risk of getting a virus from using safari web browser on your phone and downloading links from websites off the Internet? Because everyone says there's no need for protection as its all safe, as far as I'm aware that's just from the app store and not the actual Internet.

Plus there is an app out at the minute which locates where you are in real life and the idea is to pop bubbles that real people have left and leave bubbles yourself. These bubbles contain things like pictures, notes, links, apps etc. That you can download to your phone .....to me this seems pretty risky as you don't know who has left these bubbles and what potential risk they are??
But this app has been approved by apple??

Im confused as to whats safe . So basically, is it safe to use and download links from safari Internet on your phone and is this igo bubble app safe to use?? Because as people say there is no protection out there?

There are viruses for iOS but they are rare. A developer who presented a proof of concept for an iOS virus was quickly banned from going near the App store. Apple really didn't want anyone to know about it.

You can be sure that with the popularity of iOS devices that hoards of hackers are working hard to exploit any opportunity. Unfortunately Apple didn't plan security into iOS. Likewise Google with Android. Both are franticly working on this issue.

These "bubbles" sound like an excellent vector and I agree with your suspicions.

Generally speaking Safari is not a security conscious browser whereever it is hosted.

Also note that a PC virus can be transmitted via any file so it is quite possible for a Mac or iPhone to become a "Typhoid Mary" so to speak and pass viruses to your PC.
