I'm trying to determine which version of Word I'm running. When I upgraded to Windows 7 we just transferred the one I had already; when I open it, the 'title page' comes and goes so quickly that I can't read it. Clicking on Control Panel hasn't helped, as for some reason Word isn't listed in the programs. I think I need a newer version - or is there a better alternative?

As in all Windows Programs:
Click Help/About
rojash, read it again m8.

I think you need to maybe re-install it.
I doubt that you need a newer version, Word doesn't tend to get better with each version, just bigger and more complicated.
I have Office 2007 on one of my machines so that I can support clients who use it, but for daily work I use Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org/
oh you did :)
Ratter15, I reread it. The question says that the OP is trying to determine which version he/she is running and that the splash screen disappears very quickly. It may be that the program is not working, but if that's the case, there's no indication of that in the question.
Im assuming she cannot open the programme to find out what version she has, I may be wrong.
"we just transferred the one I had already"

How did you transfer it?

You can't really transfer programs, you need to reinstall them from th original CD.
Ratter, I was typing my answer and suddenly remembered that Mr Fickens has a habit of getting his post in during my typing period, so I thought I'd answer the question in chunks!
:-)
I'm using M/S Office 2003 on my W7 pc and everything works ok. You say you transferred it, I'm assuming you meant installed it?
Do not see why you would need a newer version
Aye, but the thing is that Word isn't listed in the list of applications, which is suspicious. A re-install of Office/Word wouldn't hurt, just to rule out an installation problem.
^^ I rest my case...
Lots of folk have a habit of sneaking posts in while one types.

Thanks. My problem is that I have a large file that I need to keep; could I transfer it wholesale to Open Office? The Word version I have is still working, so maybe I'd better not fiddle with it.
"My problem is that I have a large file that I need to keep"

That's nothing to do with the actual program, word...

You have the program, that can't be transferred, it needs to be installed, and you also have your personal files that you've created, they can be transferred from computer to computer.

OK.......transferred was the wrong word, obviously I meant 'installed'. Just to recap, as several posters have overlapped, Word is working well, but being conscious of everyone's advice that it's good to keep up with new technology I thought I ought to check, as this version (and I still don't know how to find out which one it is) was originally installed on my previous computer something like eight years ago. When I tried Help it informed me that a component - presumably Mr Paperclip? - was missing, but that didn't stop my being able to open Help - though it wasn't any (Help, I mean).
"and I still don't know how to find out which one it is"
"Click Help/About"

Data files can just be copied from one PC / drive to another.
If Word opened the file on your old Pc it ought have no problem on the new one.

I'm unsure how good Open Office is at importing other application's documents, having never used it,. Probably best "suck it & see".

What would you suggest that I type in to the Help box? nothing I've tried has been any use so far.
In Word 10 click on FILE in the menu bar and 3rd from the bottom in the displayed list on the left is HELP which, if you click on it, displays the version number and year in the right side of screen.
( i meant: in Office 2010...)
"Word is working well"
Yippee! I was right all along :-)
