what connection type would I need to connect my computer to my flat screen television please

No. (USB is a data connection, not video)

standard VGA cable should do it

And you'd need a cable for audio, excatly which one depends on what the PC audio in connection is on your TV.

(if your laptop happens to have a HDMI port on it you could also use that and then you'd only need one lead.)

Or you can get them from places like tescos for about 4-5quid, don't be fooled into getting an expensive one by people telling you the quality will be better, that's just a load of rubbish.

It's also worth checking you actually have a spare HDMI connection on the TV to plug it into.
