Further to my scanner query below, I now realise that I used to scan for attaching to emails using ControlCentre, but ControlCentre is no longer there. How do I get it back? Thanks.

Have you used any cleaning or registry software?
Look for control centre setting and 'start with Windows' is probably what you want. Or find the Control centre in Programs, and drag a copy of it (R click, drag, copy) to the Startup tab in Programs.

Thanks, Albags, but things are now even more complicated. I have now recovered ControlCentre by re-installing the printer/scanner software from the CD.
But now, although the device is very much connected to the computer (the printer works and the SCAN buttons on the printer make the computer react) when I try to scan I get a message telling me that the scanner is not connected and so ControlCentre won't do what it should.
What OS are you using ? If you are using Windows 7 then you cant use the buttons on the scanner as it doesn't recognise them . To use the scanner you have to use the printer scanner control centre to do it . This has been like this since Vista.
