When I go to shutdown my laptop the sign that" updates are available", is there. I left it shuting down as usual and went to bed, then I was horrified to find it stll on full power and trying to configure the updates when I came down the next morning. Why is this happening. I shut it down earlier last night but after 3/4 of an hour it was still configuring. How do I stop this please? Thanks.

One way is to let it finish the updating.

8 hours?

3/4 did mean three quarters of an hour but after the last time when it had kept going all night, I just shut it down as I don't want it whirring away while I'm asleep upstairs. Fire risk.
I would also recommend letting it finish what it is doing. If it means leaving it on during the night then so be it. You won't have to stop up though as you don't need to do anything during the update process.

Whinge at Microsoft if you're not happy.....

There's no way I'm leaving it on all night. If that's the case and nothing can be done, I'll just shut it down by logging off manually and shutting down. I just thougfht something might be wrong to make it take so long.

"There's no way I'm leaving it on all night. "

Why ever not?
we often leave computers running all day and night, including laptops, no problems, no worries.

They are designed to work this way.

I don't like it because of the heat that builds up.
most computers in offices and industry ,(yes just your basic pc ones) are never shut off they run programmes 24/7

But this is a laptop deggers. Sitting on a settee.
chrissa1, if you are so worried just get a smoke detector and put above your laptop or put your laptop under an existing smoke detector during the night and make sure your lappy is on a solid surface like a table not a carpet or soft furnishings, this way they are better able to keep cool.
"But this is a laptop deggers. Sitting on a settee. "
I'm not surprised that heat builds up. You are blocking the cooling vents.
Laptops should always be placed on a flat rigid surface when on, regardless of whether they are in use or not.

So basically, it's quite normal for a laptop to take so long to install updates?
Yes some updates can take that long, it's quite normal
It's not normal as such, but it's not unusual either.

You've not mentioned what version of windows you've got, but you could try resetting the windows update components and trying a update again to see if it sorts it out quicker.

also, as other have said, do not run you laptop on a sofa, it will overheat and damage it! they must be used on hard flat surfaces.

I'm running Windows 7 Chuck.
My laptop runs Vista and at times the updates have taken hours to complete. Although this is sometimes because I put off updating so it has a lot of catching up to do. You have to just let it run until the updates are installed.

There is no problem with a laptop being left on for a long time. Mine is a work laptop so is on my desk, turned on from 9-5 and then usually in the evenings too. Just don't leave it on the sofa, but it on a flat hard surface where the air can moved around.
