The Elephant Man (1980).

I watched it this afternoon on video, specifically because I was inspired to do so by the trailers you mention.

P.S. According to the cedits at the end, it's "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber

P.P.S. The music in the Six Nations rugby trailers definitely is the same music as the theme tune for the film "The Elephant Man", but I have now been reliably informed by the resident classical music expert (IndieSinger) that it is not in fact "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber.

The credits at the end of the film merely say "Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber performed by Bla bla bla; other music performed by Bla bla bla", so I therefore presumed that "Adagio for Strings" was referring to the theme music at the beginning of the film, whereas it was in fact referring to one of the other bits of music in the film.

Apologisificationalisms for polluting my correct first answer with my second misleading answer, thus requiring a clarificationalism by this third answer.

quote from BBC sports webpage

"Qu: What is the tinkly/jangly piece of music accompanying the slow motion trailer for the forthcoming Six Nations tournament?

Dave Richmond, UK

Ans: It is from John Morris' score from the film Elephant Man, directed by David Lynch in 1980. "
