Why do Southern commentators say The British Isles? Are they not The British Lions?

No, officially they are the British and Irish Lions.

The British Isles includes Ireland and the UK so it is the correct term, and less of a mouthful than "The British and Irish Lions". Any ignorance belongs a little closer to home.
