I was told recently, that years ago a football league goalie
had a habit of wearing a signet ring during games. During
one particular match he went to tip the ball over the bar
but as he did so , he caught his signet ring between the
staples that held the net in place and his finger, and as he
dropped to the ground his weight removed his trapped
finger from his hand . Has any one heard of this story ?

I'm not sure who(if anybody) it happened to but when I played that was one of the reasons given for taking rings off before games and the eventual phasing out of hooks to hold nets on.
I remember John Osbourne the former West Brom goalie had a "bionic" finger, but that was due to arthritis :-)
Was it Graham Banks?
Saw this on a site

"In 1985, Argentine goalkeeper Nery Pumpido almost lost a finger in a freak training ground accident when he caught his wedding ring on a rogue nail on the crossbar"

I have heard the story, but can't remember who it was. The search continues.....
