Brilliant Max, too knackered to concentrate tonight but will tackle it in the morning, thanks for not answering outright. I need a nudge but don't want a solution, that would take all the fun out of it.
Take care.

Hi Max. looked up the Graeae on wiki and although now steeped in Ancient Greek trivia, am really no further on. Is age the theme?
GRAEAE def in chambers sea goddesses who shared between them a single eye and a single tooth
14a full answer is unmoneyed

Thanks Max, I had worked out 14 across, the ones I am stuck on are, Across, 1, 17, 20 (skin?) 23. 26, 28. and down, 7 (oint?) 19, and 26 (sorry?)
Which other crosswords do you do? We complete the AZED and Mephisto and Jumbo Times everyweek and decided to tackle the Inquisitor for a bit more of a challenge, and it's certainly proved to be that.
All the best

I usually complete the INQUISITOR (with help sometimes), very occasionally complete EV (sun telegraph ) with assistance from some very helpful people on this site, and if I have time I like to look at THE LISTENER (sat times) and it is literally just a look most weeks

Question Author
Thanks Madmax,
Still don't fully understand it but hopefully dearly beloved will now be able to complete it when he returns from work tonight. Nice to know I hadn't gone wrong though. I always look at the Listener and that's as far as it goes too. Recently there was a radio programme about crosswords and the Listener was deemed to be the most difficult of all regularily published puzzles, sometimes I think Inquisitor could give it a run for it's money.
Judy
think ( eye) and ( tooth) from definition of graeae then re read preamble
Question Author
Cracked it at last, might get some cleaning, gardening and walking the dog done now. Thanks for your help;
