This years world championship is the first time i have heard the above commentating on matches .

However , why doesn't he make comments on the players shot selections / the play as it is happening on the table ?

He seems to leave that to his co commentators

Bet Hendry,Virgo and the rest are stuck for something positive to say now their dear “Ronnie” is thankfully knocked out.

What's that got to do with my question?
Surely shot selection is something best left to the "expert" co-commentators?
He’s probably told just to describe the action and leave the comments to Hendry,Virgo,Doherty et al.My point was that these commentators always are going on about Ronnie this Ronnie that.

Why have RW as a commentator if he is not going to / don't have the knowledge to comment on the play as it is happening ?

Because the co-commentators aren't necessarily so adept at discribing the action. Much like the commentary teams on football or rugby. Both have their individual roles.
You're paying an awful lot of money to a talking head, you want a return for your outlay, even if only to comment on the slowest game in the world.

Not the most engaging of characters I've found.
Question Author
Ever since I have been watching snooker , both commentators have been describing the action as its happening on the table

Rob Walker is the only co commentator who does not do that
Can't say I've noticed, but in honesty, I mentally switch off from the commentators.
Question Author
By the way I've nothing against him personally

In fact I like hearing him introducing the players

Yes that’s his usual job. Also wish the BBC would poach Joe Johnson and Dominic Dale from Eurosport, both inciteful and without the obvious bias of Virgo,Hendry and Doherty.
reminds me of john inverdale commentating on wimbledon when he clearly knows nothing about tennis . . .

On all sporting events, I turn the sound off. What happens now is that the commentators use it as a chat show, talking about anything but what's happening on the field of play. The worst sport for this is cricket. So, I give them a few minutes, then the usual "banter" starts, and I turn off the sound.
I watched a few minutes of MoD Podcast last night and I couldn't believe that the BBC are spending part of our licence fee on this programme. Absolute and utter waste of money on garbage.

Motor racing is my no one sport - not much unconnected banter goes on there .

To be fair - I don't hear much unconnected banter from the commentators in snooker , either .

By the way , I just can't take to Mark Selby - I don't know why

Aye - the "Jester from Leicester" is a bit of a misnomer - he always looks pretty grim. Concentrating I suppose.
Mark Williams seems to have a pretty easy-going attitude. More like he's enjoying himself rather than it being a chore.
Question Author
Yeah I wonder how he got the title 'jester'

Not much smiling going on from him
The only reason he got saddled with 'jester' is because it rhymes with 'Leicester'. Just as well he doesn't come from Wick
