For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Because whisky has only recently (since the war) been seen as a sophisticated drink and it fell out of favour whereas in Scotland it was very much a tradition and the distilleries (some of them) survived. Visited the St. George's distillery a few years ago before any of the spirit they had was allowed to be called whisky but you could taste that they had something going on, won't really be able to assess it until they've got some 15yr olds and the like.
