Average speeds, over a given distance, are easy to calculate. For example Usain Bolt covered 100m in 9.572 seconds. That's an average speed of 37.61km/h = 23.37mph

However instantaneous speeds are harder to measure. The highest reliably recorded instantaneous speed was 11.91m/s (= 42.88 km/h = 26.65mph) by Donovan Bailey in 1996. Less reliable equipment had previously measured his top instantaneous speed as 12.1m/s (= 43.56km/h = 27.07mph).

It needs to be remembered though that people other than world-class athletes might have achieved higher speeds when, for example, fleeing from immediate danger (especially if they're running downhill with a strong wind behind them, which are advantages that the athletes wouldn't have).

It has also been suggested that some early human beings might have been able to run considerably faster than modern man, with evolution favouring other factors in human development ahead of raw speed. So the highest speed ever achieved might have been by a cave man!

joking apart mighty, i think i was at the same game in ´86. all i remember was the underground, and brown underpants.

On the same note, anyone caught wearing a Linfield top in the wrong part of north Belfast would quite probably rival the practically supersonic speed I set one night in the eighties, after a Cliftonville game.
