My Mum Tells Me I Should Wear My Hair A Certain Way

She says this so I could look more glamorous. Well, for during the day, I like to look natural and I tend to clip my hair back at the sides for work, especially. She said I should wear more red lipstick too. I don't like the look she encourages of me. She thinks if I look more glamorous, then there could be the potential to meet a mate, like Fiona* in my office who wears red lipstick everyday! Well, you know, I hate red lipstick, plus it doesn't suit my skin tone!! I like buying clothes from charity shops - everything opposite mum thinks I should be. I get compliments all the time on my appearance, so why should I change? How do I think in this situation? 🤷

Present yourself the way you want to, whatever makes you comfortable, nothing to do with anyone else.Maybe she is trying to control you again and making you doubt yourself. If you're happy with yourself, stay as you are.

Tell her sexism is on the way out. You are your own person and to hell with dated societal "catch a mate" conventions.

You do what makes you happy.

Tell your mum that it's your life, not hers.

Just do your hair, make-up and clothes as you like.

Mybe she's worrying that when she's gone you will be entirely alone unless you find a partner. Telling you how to dress etc at your age is unacceptable but her intentions may be totally caring.

Thank you guys, so far xx

You could try reverse psychology. Very short skirt, knee high boots, low cut top with bare midriff, black lipstick.

Just be yourself though

Advice is just advice. Thank the person for it, ignore what you disagree with and consider that which seems reasonable to you.

I've said before that I think your mum might be concerned about you being alone when she's gone.  All you can do is tell her you're happy as you are.

in all honesty, although we clearly only get one side of the story, your mum sounds toxic to me.  She can control you coz you live in her house.  You either have to change something (move out?) or put up with it.  People rarely change, and she's had 70+ years of being her
