Just watched this game on I.T.V4 (what a match), what 3 things are unusual about that game. And no I don't mean the penalties, or that today the tackles would have meant it ended as a 5 a side game.

A replay was scheduled, if the game ended in a draw - but hours before the game both managers agreed to a penalty shoot out instead of a replay.

Ok then 4 things. LOL.
It's a lt more simple than that.
the keepers picking up back passes off their own team ?
tournament to have this format, as the tournament was expanded to include eight teams four years later.

It was the first and only time that all four matches in the final tournament were decided after extra time, either on penalties or by goals scored.

This was also the last tournament in which the hosts had to qualify for the final stage.

: ))
sorry missed copying the first bit!

At the time, only four countries could play the final tournament which meant that there were only the semi-finals, the final and the third place match. This was the last tournament to have this format, as the tournament was expanded to include eight teams four years later.

It was the first and only time that all four matches in the final tournament were decided after extra time, either on penalties or by goals scored.

good old wiki eh?
not quite correct Dot.

Qualifying competition had 8 groups of 4 teams each. each group winner qualified for the final 8 (quarter finals).

Interestingly one of these teams was Wales, which I believe was the only time they qualified for a major competition without any of the other home countries qualifying.

anyway 8 countries took part in quarter finals on home and away basis before the determining the semi finals.

semis, 3rd place play off and final were all played in either Zagreb or Belgrade over 5 days (June 16-20 1976).

no messing around - if it could be that simple nowadays.

Yes Dot, all four games went to extra time, etc. but the question was referring to the final game specifically.

Get ready to groan.
The match was competed by two countries which no longer exist in a country thaty no longer exists.
Czechoslavakia now the Czech Republic and Slovakia separate, West Germany now unified and Belgrade now in Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia), who threw that tomato!?
