Taking all the sentiment out of this and the fact that this lady is 100 years old, has Frank Lampard every right to gain his property back from a relative of an ex-fiancée?

Of course he has. Doesn't make it morally ok though, in my opinion.
He could pay for this flat with one weeks wages, but I guess he thinks why should he.
The thing is, they have been separated for quite some time now, and I'm sure Ellen Rivas could afford to keep her grandmother there. She seems to go to the opening of an envelope, so I'm sure she's not that hard up!
100 years old? patience isn't his strong point is it?
He offered to sell it to her for below the market value (his ex) I'm sure between her modelling and maintenance payments she's not on the bread line. She, Elen Rivas, could afford to house her own grannie!
Apparently he's offered to sell it below market value and be a gurantor for mortgage so it seems he has been reasonable. I wouldn't want to continue paying for a property that my ex uses for his granny four years after we've split up, why should he? Especially if said ex or granny had the means to fund it themselves.
Look at it another way - would you be willing to buy a flat for each of your ex-girlfriend's grans?
yes
Why should we take the sentiment out of the story, AoG? You often make an appeal to sentimentality when you make posts like "whatever is happening to england"?

Of course he has the legal right to regain his property - but should he exercise his legal right - that is the point. Actions such as this have a legal dimension, but they have a moral weight too, and it seems this action could be considered pretty cold- blooded and amoral.

Were he on his last bean, with no other assets and a pressing need for money or a roof over his head, that might be a different issue - but that seems pretty unlikely.

Objectively, one would imagine he would not have long to wait before the property becomes vacant anyway, given her age - why not display some humanity and just wait?
he appears to have displayed quite a bit of humanity so far, LazyGun. He even offered to sell it cheaply to his ex so she could house her own gran in it - but she refused and is now blaming him.

I'm not a great fan of rich footballers, but he seems to me the one with the decency.
I also think it show a huge amount of decency. He's been split with his ex for 4 years!

I'm sure he won't turf granny out on the streets.
@jno - actually, after re-reading the article and on reflection, I would agree with you and would amend my initial response.

It does sound like his ex should have stepped up and done more to help out her own relative.

He might find it harder to get the flat back than he thinks
He was in the news last week for renting a flat to an MP. Maybe he needs this one for a similar purpose.
ummm.....yes? it's not like ellen rivas can't afford to keep her, either. why should frank keep her? doesn't matter how much money he has - it's his and nobody else's.
hang on, it's his kids great grandma, and so not as distant a connection as people here are saying,
Still not his responsibility, dotty. He's moving on with his life. His responsibility is to his children, nothing more.

yes, he has the right and i dont blame him... sounds like he just wants to force Elens hand here... i very much doubt he'd see the old lady on the streets... and he knows Elen wont either ... so she will do what she should have done 4 years ago and buy the flat for her.

the cheek of her to whine that he 'virtually' earns so much in a year he could pay outright - well so does she!
why should he fund her family?

4 years he has funded this and made offers to her to take it off his hands cheaply, but she wont - who knows why... spite? being awkward? being tight?

if she is such a beloved grandma to Elen, she would not have allowed it to get to this point - that he feels the need to send solicitors letters must be a last resort ... this will upset the old lady no end.

on a personal level ... he should have sent a warning letter to elen saying what he was intending - because the shock and worry of something like this is bad enough to anyone, let alone a 100yr old woman ... but he has been decent up to now so i suppose he felt he had to up the ante or something.

it might seem cruel of him when written as a headline, but i doubt hed actually turf her out.
Lol Triggs...

"on a personal level ... he should have sent a warning letter to elen saying what he was intending"

He probably did, Joko, but that doesn't make great headlines.
