The League Against Cruel Sports accused race organisers of 'ritual animal cruelty'.
It said there have been 17 deaths at the National in the last 16 years.
A spokesman said: 'It is ritualised animal cruelty and yet the racing industry stand by and watch, while John Smith's put their profits into sponsoring the cruelty.
'Everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed.'
Andrew Tyler of Animal Aid attacked the BBC, alleging a commentator described the dead horses lying on the course as an 'obstacle'.
He said: 'When horses are killed at the Grand National meeting, their deaths are not accidents but entirely predictable.
'The public has been conned into believing that the Grand National is a great sporting spectacle when, in reality, it is straightforward animal abuse that is on a par with Spanish bullfighting.
'This race should have no future in a civilised country. The BBC deserves particular condemnation for all but concealing news of the deaths.
'It is particularly callous and disgusting that a member of the BBC commentary team should describe the dead horses as they lay on the course as an "obstacle".'

racehorses are bred to race...its in their blood...there are as many horse fatalities in showjumping than there are in horse racing show horses are bred to jump in equestrian events, they jump over fences with a near sheer vertical drop at the other side of the fence..that is not the case at aintree i do think tho that there are too many horses in the race..the owners, the riders and all connections of the poor horses that died today will all be in bits tonight..but the horses died doing what they lived for...racing...sorry if that sounds heartless but its the fact...

I don't really have an issue with bull fighting, never mind horses. The horse racing industry is huge and the horse live pretty good lives. Of course there are maverics in any industry and the horse racing industry has had some, and shame on those small percentage of folk. Most owners, trainers, stable teams etc etc really love their charges and will be appalled at the loss of two today.
The issue today is what prat allowed a hunter to race amongst this field as that was one of the deaths. It should have not been included and I would like to kno who is ultimately responsible for this very poor decision, the owner, the trainer or the race officials??
