Islam makes a big play about not bowing down to graven idols. The fact that it forbids representations of Humans and animals etc is well known and there is a lot of criticism towards catholic practices of worhiping at the relics of saints etc.

Yet millons of them crown ito a stadium in Mecca circle a stone building and desperately try to kiss a black stone simply because they believe their phophet did the same.

Is this not a form of idolotry? Is it any different to Catholics worshipping infront of thorn of the supposed "crown of thorns"

As I understand it the RC practice of invocation of saints is not so that they will use their powers, but will intercede with God to use his.
Yes, quite right, because they have more influence over God than the hoi polloi. God loves you. Of course he does. Believe that and you'll believe anything.
Boxtop - I would say that it is not a military man but just a normal security person. And because of my own experience (as I have been there) I can tell you that a security man only stands there during the days of Hajj or Umrah during Ramazan. And the only objective is to keep people moving on so the others can kiss that stone. During other days as it is not really that busy so no one stands there. Then kissing that stone is just Sunnah and therefore not compulsory therefore during busy times many people do not even try.
Naomi - You are right that it is meteorite and even NASA proves that. But 1400 years ago no one knew as they had no way of proving that. But as prophet said people believed and he was right.
how can you prove that a prophet has the authority of as higher being (if such exists)
