A confirmation is a celebration, and one would (ladies) usually dress up, as for a wedding, but obviously anything of too startling a colour wouln't be appropriate for a church occasion.
Not as far as I know. I've never heard of it.

thanx folk but there does seem a lot of confusion on this matter x I have worn red to wedding before and it wasnt deemed inappropriate but for some reason listening to folk on and off here there is different views on a confirmation x
only the closest relatives and god parents tend to dress up in formal gear, everyone else is smart/casual. they prob said it was inappropriate becaues you might be over dressied.
I think smart casual will get yout rhough.

Anything too striking will detract from the communicants who wear a standard outfit of white dress, or white shirt and dark trounsers.

It is their day - you wouldn't want to be the talking-point at their expense wouild you?
