I would say its because people in general, have a need to know why we are here, and God in his/her/its present form fits the bill.
'God' is the 'answer' to unanswered questions and the 'explanation' for the unexplained. For those who insist on understanding explanations and on knowing the answers and are willing to withhold judgment and do the work required to discover the facts, there is science.
Like Mibsy says, God is a convenient answer for the questions we can't yet answer ourselves.
Unfortunately it also means that if people are satisfied with God as the answer then they don't bother looking for real answers and denounce those that do.
Llamatron, Mibsy? Oh I like that, but I don't know if he will.

I'm not sure if the question relates to belief in god, or the question of whether or not he(it?) exists.
As is so often the case, when 'God' enters into a discussion, it raises more questions rather than provides conclusive answers, (kind of like me coincidently) . . . lol!

"Mibsy"? I'm OK with that . . . just this once! lol

Perhaps for just this once I should refrain from being so presumptuous as to speak for other people and just stick to explaining my own reasons for questioning the existence of 'God', whoever or whatever that is supposed to be. One thing that seems startlingly and consistently evident is that 'God' appears to be extremely reticent to speak for him/it self.

Being raised deeply entrenched in a Christian environment, I was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime to seek and accept an unearned and undeserved salvation from my inborn wickedness. My inability to believe without question that we are all evil by no fault of our own insured that eternal damnation awaited me beyond the grave, (so I was told). This kind of indoctrination is devastating to a young mind struggling to come to grips with reality. For this reason it became crucial to my development (if not my survival) that I answer with complete certainty the question of Gods existence. Apart from that certainty I would be forced to endure the threat of eternal damnation throughout my entire life.

Mibsy, hummm . . . why didnt I think of that?
Mibsy ....... must try harder? :o)
I believe that all people pursue something in life.
