Israel fought four major wars, in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973.
West Point don't study Israeli tactics, because they don't make sense! They should have lost on all four occasions!
Even atheistic military experts use the word, "miracle," to describe these amazing victories.
So, were they true miracles, or did Israel just get lucky on all four occasions?
I believe that God intervened and gave Israel the victories, and fulfilled His prophecies as written in the Bible thousands of years ago.
If you take God out of the equasion, then how do you explain it all?

America would never allow Israel to lose.

So how did America sway the outcome? There was no John Wayne or Sylvester Stallone or Arnie running around the battlefield!
This is from Wiki so you can decide if you believe it or not. Sounds convincing to me, but I don't believe in miracles.

"In a 1993 interview for the Johnson Presidential Library oral history archives U.S. Secretary of Defence Robert McNamara revealed that a Carrier battle group, the U.S. 6th Fleet, already on a training exercise near Gibraltar was re-positioned towards the eastern Mediterranean to defend Israel. The administration "thought the situation was so tense in Israel that perhaps the Syrians, fearing Israel would attack them, or the Russians supporting the Syrians might wish to redress the balance of power and might attack Israel". The Soviets learned of this deployment, which they regarded as offensive in nature, and in a hotline message from Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin threatened the United States with war.

In a 1983 interview with the Boston Globe McNamara claimed that "We damn near had war." He said Kosygin was angry that "we had turned around a carrier in the Mediterranean." McNamara did not explain how the crisis was resolved.

In his book Six Days veteran BBC journalist Jeremy Bowen claims that on 4 June, 1967 the Israeli ship Miryam left Felixstowe with cases of machine guns, 105 mm tank shells, and armored vehicles in "the latest of many consignments of arms that had been sent secretly to Israel from British and American reserves since the crisis started" and that "Israeli transport planes had been running a 'shuttle service' in and out of RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire". Bowen claims that Harold Wilson had written to Eshkol saying that he was glad to help as long as the utmost secrecy was maintained."
You could argue that the miracle was that god had sent the Americans to make sure the Israelis didn't lose. That would fulfill the prophecy. Not sure what happened with the 1956 miracle though, I have scoured the history books and could not find an amazing victory in that year.
Good question Theland, and Gromit, that's a good response.

A miracle is surely a matter of semantics? One amns miracle is another mans coincidence and all that.

I don't think the '73 Yom Kippur war could be called a huge victory for Israel, a lthough a victory I would agree it was. The six day war was very much swayed by the annhilation of the Egyptian and Syrian Air Forces in a very short space of time. This was achieved by very good management of the aircraft, the IDF were turning aircraft around between sorties in a matter of minutes instead of the usual hours.

I don't know muchn about the '48 and '56 conflicts though.

For the record, I'm an atheist and I'm very critical of most things religious but from a poltical POV, I'm more on the side of Israel than her neighbours. A pro-Jew Atheist?

Strange but true...

OK, I've been thinking a bit more about this instead of working ;-), and sorry for going slightly off-topic but here goes:

God might have intervened to help the Israeli cause in some of the conflicts you mention Mr T.

What happened on 11th September? A lot of Jews were in the WTC when it was attacked by Arab extremists. Was the big fella perhaps asleep at the big red miracle button?

OK, so it wasn't an attack directly on the holy land.

What about the dozens (hundreds?) of Israelis killed in the Lebanese conflict last year? Why didn't He intervene and say, throw a tsuanmi at the Hezbollah rebels? Or was it OK because Israel knocked the $hit out of Lebanon?

What about the Iranian president making bold claims about wiping the state iof israel off the map? Why hasn't he been struck by lightning or had an anyeurism while on the khazi? Or do you think the fact iran haven't yet managed to build a fission (or much worse, a fusion weapon) is Gods intervention?

What about the Holocaust? Why did He let it go on for so long, why didn't Hitler fall down the stairs or something? Why did God let it take 6 years to assemble the allied forces and defeat the nazis? Why didn't God strike when the first jews went to the camps?

Ok, maybe a bit tongue in cheek but it's a serious question.

At what point will God decide that enough's enough and just send a plague to every anti-semite on the planet? Then Israel can have the whole of the Middle East to themselves.

This a Good Topic :-)
come off it.

Why are you not on here saying that Ariel Sharon was struck down by that stroke that put him into a persistant vegetative state as a punishment from God.

We all know full well that if Yassa Arafat had suffered the same fate you'd be on here claiming divine intervention.

You're just picking your "Miracles" again.

Excellent points Jake - and Brenda.

jollygreen - The fact remains that by any normal reckoning, Israel, according to military experts, should have lost. Particularly so in the 1948 war of independence, when the Arabs, who had allied themselves with the Germans throughout WW2, pledged to kill off the fledgling state.
As to all of the "whys" asking about Gods lack of intervention elswhwhere, this is well documented in the Bible.
But Israel, now, today, is indeed a living miracle of survival, there's no denying that.
There's no denying they have done well to survice but I would say that it's because of their determination, their planning and the size of thier balls rather than Gods intervention.

Or are they the same thing?!
p.s. Sorry about the typos...

For "survice" read "survive" and for "thier" read "their"!
Question Author
jollygreen - well whatever the means, the outcome is as the Bible predicted.
Morning Theland.

Yes indeed but tomorrow, Iran could nuke Israel and then the bibles prediction would be wrong.

How come it took so long for the state of Israel to appear? Did the bible predict that?
Superior weapons, and Gods intervention
The Israelis were armed by rthe west, US, UK France etc all christian God fearing countries, the arab armies were armed by the old Soviet Union a Godless state
Like the Saudi Arabia Arab army bristling with F15s and other US hardware?
When was Saudi Arabia involved?

George Galloway adresses alot of this in his book, not that I agree with all his points but he knows alot about this, the first answer is right- America did not want them to lose!!
I do not know much about politics and wars, but I do know when the six day war took place, I had a very close relative who was serving on board the USS Liberty.
That ship was horrifically attacked by Israel and 34 US servicemen were killed. Over a hundred were wounded badly and that ship had very little protection on board. The ship was bombed and torpedoed continually and most of those men suffered trauma for the rest of their lives.
I find it hard to call that getting lucky or a miracle on Israel's part. I do know that people are killed in wars all the time, but my relative suffered a lot after that attack and that ship was not at war.

How come he (God) didn't stop the Romans from conquering that land and ruling the Jews?
