Are You Scared Of Dying?

My mum who has terminal cancer, had mapped her funeral arrangements out long ago and it required a religious ceremony. Prayers, Hymns etc. But after been allowed to attend the cremation of my brother in law...as one of the 10 people allowed at the start of lockdown...she has since changed her mind. My BIL had a humanist funeral and my mother found it beautiful, simple and to the point. She has since changed her request from a religious ceremony to a humanist one.
No religious claptrap spouted by a priest/vicar etc about living again in some etheral realm.
Just a simple accaptance that all things must die.
She seems more at peace with that, than this idea that we will live again after death.
Its unavoidable that we all must die, faith or no faith!
Ironically, as a young christian, I was terrified of dying.
As an atheist, Im not.
It seems to me that its the terminal religious that are most afraid.
To me death is nothing more than a return to the state of being before conception...nothingness!
Still try to make the most out of existance, but nothingness is not to be afraid of.
Like been in Non-REM sleep. Nothingness.

Not scared of dying, just how it might occur.
I see myself in a heroic self sacrificing instant death, rather than some long drawn out agony like something from the opening scene of Casualty.
And I wouldn’t want to be surrounded by family and friends, just thousands of my adoring fans.
I don’t care about ‘arrangements’ as my fans would see to a great memorial. And probably a celebratory day named after me for future generations to wish they’d been alive at the time and mention me as their top guest at their fantasy dinner parties of the future.
As a very modest person it pains me to say it, but you’ll miss me when I’m gone.

I find that quote a bit skewed -
Obviously before you (that's the generic 'you') were here, no-one, including you, knows anything about you.
But after a lifetime, you have made some impact on the world you have lived in.
You may, as Mr Twain has, leave a body of work that means you are remembered long after your death, but at the very least, you will have impacted on the lives of family if you have one, and friends and acquaintances, so there is a gap when you go that was not present before you got here, because you have filled a space in the scheme of things that didn't exist before you did.

Both my beloved parents had a religious funeral because it is what they wanted and both were beautiful and moving in their own way, especially Dad's where the lovely female vicar had his immediate family walk up to his coffin, touch it and say goodbye to him. It was extremely moving and I am glad we did it. I am not religious, but my parents were and I am GLAD they had the funerals they wanted and I would not have had it any other way. Plus I know I will see them again one day and I am firm in that belief. You may get a shock when you die nailit.
I am scared of dying because I don't know how it will be, will it be painful, will it be long and drawn out or will I die in an old folks home ? However passing itself does not scare me because I know Mum and Dad will be there waiting for me, and I don't have to justify that to anyone.

pixie374 if by “...the best quality of death.” You mean headline news bulletin, wailing fans and a few days of national mourning declared, then yes, that’s generally what I would expect.
