Should our government outlaw the cruel practices of Halal and Kosher animal slaughter?
It is to me absolutely disgusting and no animal should suffer like this.

I'd agree with that. I'm told animals can still be stunned but there's no guarantee it's always done. Animal should be dead before cutting. Basic humanitarian action given the animal is destined to die for our food.
Apparently Wallonia is the new test-bed, with a decision on this looming. Another area of Belgium has already banned it (can't remember which, sorry). In the same article I was amazed to read the list of European countries in which it is already illegal.

I have been opposed to these practices for many years. A pig-farmer friend of mine (OK, not likely to be used for Halal) cares for his animals so much that he sought out a slaughterhouse where the animals trot about in a room where a sedative gas is released and then they just go to sleep and eventually die - rather like taking a cat or dog to the vet's at the end of its life. He went to see the process and is satisfied. His pigs are also free-range and I feel no guilt about eating any of his meat.

The B.V.A. has also come out against ritual slaughter and should be listened to.

I saw videos of cows hanging by one leg with their throats cut kicking and struggling.
Before the cut they are handled with metal hooks and poles.
It is an absolute disgrace.
Sikh ritual slaughter is far more humane, death instant by severing the head.
//Sikh ritual slaughter is far more humane//
How is ANY slaughter of animals humane?
Its a bit like saying that theres a 'humane' way of raping a woman.

Im completely against Halal and Kosher but if we eat meat, then we must accept that an animal has to die against its will. And it WILL suffer. But Halal and Kosher do seem uneccesarily cruel in this day and age.

(BTW, how do you think that the innumerable Biblical animal sacrifices were carried out? They didn't have stun gun technology in them days)
No animal should suffer at ALL to fill your stomach!

Eat beans!
Wouldn't that get a bit boring, BB?
Nailit - there more humane methods of doing things.
No, it ain’t boring, and I’m never troubled by thoughts of all the animals being cruelly butchered, as meat eaters must be.
//I’m never troubled by thoughts of all the animals being cruelly butchered, as meat eaters must be//

Im not troubled as such. I don't actually like the idea that nature basically eats itself to survive and reproduce itself. But it does and I must accept the obvious.
ALL of nature depends upon its survival on the death of something else.
I wish that the RSPCA would hurry up and get some laws passed to get this barbaric practice banned. They've been trying for ages.
How Muslims can stomach eating Halal meat knowing this cruel act is being carried out is beyond me.
I love Jourdains pig farmer friends method. First time I'd heard of it.
Andres - the RSPCA are useless.
To be honest, if you really care about animals you wouldn`t want them slaughtered at all - Halal or no Halal
I don't think that's true. Like the difference between battery hens and free range. At least the free range had some sort of quality of life.
Agree with you 237SJ.
Animal slaughter is never very nice and I say that coming from about 400 years of generations of farmers. That's why farmers never get too close to their animals.
I've found the article (politico something). Halal is banned in Flanders and 'traditional' slaughter is also banned in Sweden, Denmark and Slovenia. I'd like to point out that Islamic law says that people may eat non-halal meat where no-other is available and that is how the early immigrants to Bradford went on. It is not necessary.
It has nothing to compare with raping a woman. Life feeds on life. Sad is the individual that can see no difference between preying with cruelty and preying with compassion.

Nailit - If you lived in a remote location and where hungry, and you managed to catch or trap an animal to eat, how would you deal with it?
You have knives, axes, rope etc just like Bear Grylls.
Or would you eat grass?
//preying with compassion//
LOL
Like a lion has any compassion when killing a young zebra for instance?
LOL.
Life is red in tooth and claw.
Preying with compassion haha.
Really?
That has got to be one of the most absurd posts that ive ever read on AB.
