I was asked this question by a theist who was looking for some theological answer. He was rather put out when I said ' He couldn't because he didn't want to be accused of nepotism .'

My neighbours annoy me so I drown them[the flood]. Some of their relatives[Noahs lot] come and live next door and start causing trouble so I kill my son in atonement. How very odd.

Depending on which denomination of christanity - some beleive that there are three - God the Father - the son - the holy spirit .

Others beleive all three are manifestations of the same .

//Do you believe original sin still exists today modeller? //
octavius //That we are all born into the world with sinful natures. //

Thanks for a straight answer. My equally straight answer is . Yes !
Which to me means his death was a total waste.
Worse than that it was barbarous .
modeller, you may have by now noticed that none of god's plans seem so work out as intended. This demonstrates jomifl's law which states
'even the omnipotent are powerless in the hands of fate'.
It is really a re-statement of the 'law of unintended consequences' which is closely allied to 'Murphy's Law'

//I didn't have any sins in mind, I am an atheist //

That's why I asked the question. I have heard this ' original sin ' trotted out and seen a variety of obscure answers. It was a treat to get an answer that's clear. Thanks again Octavius.

keyplus Yes it is strange . It is also a fact that some Christian groups including JWs and Mormons, Jews and of course Muslims don't believe he was the son of God. So the crucifixion does not have the same meaning. Which in turn neither does the resurrection myth.
“I have a problem with resurrection. So, you believe that Jesus was son of God and God Incarnate also. Three in one and One in three. A Trinitarian belief. As I understand it, for us to be saved, God sacrificed Himself, to Himself, to save us, from Himself. This sounds to me incomprehensible, barking mad!” Michael Shermer

Sounds like that to me too.
How do you know there is a god.

What proof is there that this person (or any other person) was their son.

Religion has provided many scammers and con artists over the centuries (and still does), maybe this jesus was another of them.
Because the author of the Jesus story decided that is how the plot would progress.

If is quite obvious to any rational person that Jesus never existed.
It wasn't very well thought through was it Naomi.
Another pertinent question would be, "Why didn't Jesus save Himself?"

He could have had some great jokes like making the nails bend instead of passing through. Swapping Himself and and the guy driving the nails as soon as he had finished. Levitating the cross instead of dragging it. Making the cross fall down every time they put it up.

Odd how His magical powers deserted Him at that part of the story. Before that He only had to touch dead bodies and they would come back to life. So why did He die then Himself?

The powers returned later when He resurrected and moved the big rock.

So many inconsistencies.
Zacs, no it wasn't really. You have to question his (God's) real motives.
Or the motives of those perpetuating the myth perhaps?
Spot on! ;o)
VHG - “... Religion has provided many scammers and con artists over the centuries (and still does), maybe this jesus was another of them...”

I'm torn over him being a fraud and him not having existed at all. Assuming he did exist (which is highly debatable) then he was clearly a fraud.
@ Modeller - Its late so I may not have properly followed the conversation - but I am reading your response right - you believe in the concept of original sin?

LG //but I am reading your response right - you believe in the concept of original sin? // No!! Not in the way I think you mean. Nothing to do with all that Genesis and Jesus dying for our sins nonsense.

My response was to Octavius who said :
//That we are all born into the world with sinful natures. //
In other words we are normal human beings .
You can see here a human may make a big sacrifice in an effort to save face.
The are many examples could be mentioned. Have you ever met someone who refuses to admit that he is wrong, even when the facts are crystal clear.
Or do you know an individual who dislikes taking suggestions, who acts hurt and offended when he makes a suggestion that is not accepted by others.
Or who is stubborn and immovable in his opinions? Are you acquainted with someone who is overly proud of his prestigious higher education, or, contrariwise, is ashamed because he does not have such an education? All these characteristics can be manifestations of a concern for “face,” or personal honor.

When Jesus commanded us to ‘love our neighbors as ourselves,’ he implied that there would be a certain amount of concern for our own selves. (Matt. 22:39) Having self-respect helps us to keep ourselves clean, reliable and honest. Who wants to be thought of as dirty, unreliable and dishonest.
Goodlife, the question is 'Why Didn't God Save His Son?'.

Any chance of you attempting to answer that rather than preaching?
