“... Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said his 57-nation body would not try again for United Nations support to ban insults to religion, but appealed for states to apply hate-speech laws concerning Islam...”
I can only think that this is good news. What the OIC was calling for was effectively a sweeping end to free speech across the entire globe which would have made it illegal to criticise appallingly intransigent religious/political ideologies such as Islam. Thankfully, their fascist views have been rejected by the 'western' international community. That being said, the battle for freedom of speech continues since the OIC are now calling for individual nations to make it illegal to say something blasphemous about any faith – by which of course they mean Islam in particular.
As Naomi rightly observes, the mission is the same but the tactics have changed. However, I can't help but feel that a rather significant event has just occurred.
