I particularly like the visions of hell where there are many odd things happening in the image like this one.

If you have the links or the names of the painting or image i'd be much appreciated.

I was going to say Hieronymus Bosch! His work is so detailed but very weird!!
He's one of my favourite artists, Erin.
Have a look at this, too.........

Thanks markrae and Erinx that's exactly the type of work i meant.

What on earth were these artists inspiration and what were these guys like psychologically? Were they of sound minds as you have to admit these images are pretty twisted yet strangely interesting.
My dad had a massive print of one of his paintings. Can't remember which one it was though.

Dali's Surrealism is quite dreamlike. Melting clocks and all that :-)

I'm off to bed now but please if you think of any more like these feel free to put them up.

Good evening all.

Oops - wrong thread!
I would love to give a response to this post, but, no..., hang on..., save it for later.
Although it's spookily appropriate, I've asked for it to be removed as it's in the wrong thread...

//What on earth were these artists inspiration //

The bible.

"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom" (Luke 16:23).

"The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;" (2 Samuel 22:6).

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Revelation 21:8).

"And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit" (Revelation 9:2).

"And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name" (Revelation 14:11).

"And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame " (Luke 16:24).
Richard Dadd was in an asylum when he painted the fairy feller's master stroke.

Dali and Marc Chagall are good for dream like paintings. Dali famously designed the dream sequence from the Hirchcock film 'Spellbound'.
Google them and you'll get loads of images back.
Just type any hell related word into the google images search box, there are some very weird people.
