We are on a meter and pay £20 per month. There are only two of us and we try to be frugal with water use.
Meter was read on Thursday and the new bill came today, Saturday and Lo:- we have to pay £30 per month next year.
That's the pension rise for this year taken care of then. Council tax bill for next year still to come. Will it never end?????????
I consider water charges to be very reasonable - £1 a day for all the water I need. And don't forget all your dirty water/effluent is being taken away, treated and recycled. Very good value.
How much a year is it without a meter? Not that we could change though. I think meters are a good thing as you pay for what you use but this increase is shocking and not due to our excessive use.
We have often thought about going onto a meter as there is only us two and we are out all day ( only wash up once a day :>) ) With Yorkshire Water we pay about £350 yet our friends who live in Lancaster have United Utilities and only pay have of that. How does that work then ?? It is robbery
Are you sure you haven't got a leak? That sounds like a huge increase to me.
I pay £12 per month on a water meter. It went up from £10 per month. I know charges vary in different parts of the country but your increase does sound excessive.
Have you checked that your meter is not 'running' when you appear to not be using any water?
Our meter was running when I was in the house on my own and had not opened a tap or flushed the loo......We had a leak in a disused pipe, under the house, which hadn't been capped-off properly. We saw a real reduction in usage once it was repaired.
TheOtherHalf We are 5 miles from lanc' with united utilities. I think that I will have to get in touch with them as i feel £378 for next year is far too much.
New build (11 years) so i don't think we'll have a leak.
i have an aquarium which gets a partial water change of 8 gallons each fortnight but has done for the past 4 years, so no change there. Last summer I hardly used the garden hose.
Just take a few minutes and watch your water meter. If as far as you are aware, there are no appliances, etc. running your meter dials should remain static......if you have a leak, you'll soon find out. 11 years is plenty enough time for a problem to have sprung up somewhere.......
I'm not on a water meter and pay over £700 a year. The charge has gone up by on average 10% a year for the last six years. When I queried it I just got letters saying the average rise was only 5-6% per annum with some going up and some less depending on the council tax band, and how the infrastructure was being improved. I then wrote to the regulator and my MP for an explanation of why Band D was always increased by so much more. The question was never answered- I just got the same bland letters back. I just gave up.
I am now looking at moving to a meter now the young factors have moved out
