What do you think about swearing?

Do you think that it is acceptable to swear and curse in front of children or in the company of friends?
I rarely swear but have friends who do - in fact one does it so much that she doesnt even realise it half the time! When out at a pub this week a group of young guys were there and every second word was a swear word and I almost asked them to curb their language.
Am I being too "old fashioned"? The "F" and "C" words seem to be part of our accepted language nowadays which is sad.
What are your views?
(I await the first "F**K Off post with baited breath LOL!)

Ive brought my daughter up the way i was brought up,to respect others.I hate to hear kids swearing and usually have to bite my tongue to stop myself from saying something.I know my daughter swears in the company of her mates but not in front of me or any of her elders.And she certainly doesnt swear in the high Street or other public places.
No need for it at all. My daughter's friends think it's big and clever to use the f word even though they are all only aged 13 and 14. My daughter never ever swears and even my son who is 20 doesn't swear in front of me, though I'm sure he does when he's with his mates. We are friends with a family who swear all the time. Every second word is the f or c word. Even the 4 year old tells everyone to f**k off !

Hi Jillius, Skreecheeboy, I did used to swear when I was a teen (long long ago) and would never swear in front of "grown ups" or my parents. Most of my mates wouldnt either.
I also think that there is far too much swearing on television. You will regularly hear the "F" word on all sorts of programmes nowadays at quite an early time.

Like all language, swearing is about time and place.
I swear with colleagues at work, we are all like-minded and no one is offended.
I never ever sear at home, and nor do any of my children - all adults - it's simply not the way we talk to each other.
To my mind, swearing uses ugly words in a violent way - that's the point - to release frustration and indicate emotion. That's why nearly all swear words are single syllable words with harsh consonants, so you can really spit the words out.
The notion of mildy using obscenities in everyday speech simply smacks of lack of vocabulary, imaturity, bravado, or all of the above.
I am an extremely articulate person, I can convey my feelings without swearing if I wish, and I do.
I find casual swearing in young people ugly and unpleasant, and I will say something if I hear it in front of children, who don;t need to think it is perfectly acceptable, it's not.

I know that its only words to a certain degree but its the harshness and violence that they can convey. I do feel uncomfortable when with friends who curse in front of their children, and I just think that its unnecessary in everyday conversation. I feel that it shows a lack of imagination and lack of respect.
