It really took off in the UK on the eve of the Y2K Millennium. Previous to that you may have got one or two rockets at midnight but nothing on the scale we now do.

I think they've done it in Scotland for a while, haven't they? Now it's spreading, I suppose. Edinburgh and London both get TV coverage out of it so it's worth their while as advertising.

i was only a child at the time, but when i clearly remember fireworks was 2000, wasnt it ment to be special for the Millennium but then it leaked out into the later years till current

We live in Italy and always have fireworks at New Year.

In the UK. I'd go with Y2K too - that's the earliest I can remember. Prior to that it was nothing that special

I gave birth to my daughter on New Years Eve of 2002 and I remember being in hospital watching the fireworks from the window, lol. They were spectacular and much better than bonfire night or the Millennium! But in answer to the question I guess for England it was the Millenium that started off some sort of tradition!!!
