Why do horsey people think they own the road?

Why is it that on a weekly basis, on my way home from work, on the road I live that clearly states its 60mph am I gestured to fiercely to slow down by people on horseback and not enough that I have huge arm gestures to slow down, they mouth the words "slow down" also. This is not just on my road though, my partner experiences them a lot on main roads. I heard somewhere that tarmac is bad for horses feet anyway. Am I missing something, why do these stupid arses take horses on main roads and usually 9 times out of 10 there is a trainee with them and the horse is all over the road!! Please just f**k off, roads are for cars, fields are for horses!!!!!!!

Perhaps, Delgirl, you could help your local horsey community to campaign for the preservation of bridleways and the provision of safe, off-road riding areas. Persuade landowners to open parts of their land to riders, and the local authority to allow restricted access to public parts. Believe me, if riders could avoid busy roads, they would.
There's a huge country park near us that was given to the people of the city by its previous owners, but is managed by a private trust. It's riddled with footpaths and is well-used, but there's also a network of specified bridleways so that riders don't upset walkers, and walkers' dogs don't upset the riders. Cars aren't allowed, so that's not an issue there, but perhaps riders and motorists working together for mutual benefit is the way forward.

Ridiculously untrue, mrrobbo15. Good solid roads were necessary long before the motor vehicle existed. Can you really believe that armies always moved their infantry, wagons, cannons and ammunition carts along muddy tracks? Why do you think that the Romans built such very fine roads in our country? Solidly-layered and impacted Macadam roads were invented by the man of that name in the early 19th century.
It is not necessary nowdays for horses to be on the roads, we have moved on a little in the form of transport for getting from A to B.
For those who wish to use horses for leisure purposes then grassed areas are the best and safest place. Here they can deposit their droppings without any danger of motor cycles skidding on it. They are as out of place on todays roads as 4 x 4s are in the city. Thinking of that perhaps they would no mind me driving my 4 X 4 around their gymkhana fields?
But if these Horsey types insist on cluttering the roads with their animals, then why can't they also use the Motor Ways? Then they could really get into a gallop on them.

anotheoldgit, you don't seem to have read my answer where I point out that horse-riders have an absolute right to use the roads but motorists and motor-cyclists don't. If motorists recognised this more often, and behaved accordingly, relations between the two sets of road-users would improve. (I am not a rider, by the way, merely a barrack-room lawyer.)

i hate driving past horses, one, you have to slow down, two, you have to wait until theres nothing coming before overtaking and three, you have to wave and smile when all you're thinking is 'you are an absolute tw#t.' tolerance is for saps, why do you think we out-evolved neanderthals? humans didn't tolerate them. of course today that would be racism and the short ugly guys would have trampled all over us.

I think you will find that many horse riders would rather not be riding on the roads, they often take their life into their own hands when doing so. Use of the road you are talking about maybe the only way to get somewhere, as as someone replied the 60MPH sign is the maximum speed not MINIMUM. If you are constantly in a hurry to get somewhere why not leave slightly earlier so you will be able to behave considerably towards other road users on your travels......
Due to the poor weather I am forced to ride on the roads I own a nervous horse so if you approached me too fast I would wave you to slow down and I would probably mouth the words too. I also take my 7 year old daughter out on her pony.
Horses are unpredictable and something may spook him/her, if you drive slowly past and give a wide berth a tragic incident could be avoided.
I am a car driver too, but I always give full consideraton to whoever I meet on the roads, wherever they may be.....

SECONDLY - If it wasn't for the shear greed of man that wants to build houses and roads everywhere to accomodate the ever increasing population of humans, we as horse riders would have more land and countryside to ride on.
As it is some of us HAVE to ride on the roads for several reasons, i.e. our bridlepaths are overused and become boggy in the winter and unrideable, therfore our only choice is to ride on the roads.
We DO NOT only ride for pleasure, we ride to keep our horses fit, it our horses are stabled and are not able to graze in the winter due to bad weather, we HAVE to ride to avoid conditions such as azoturia.

1 - ever ridden a horse on the road? they are unpredictable, they can spook at so little as a CRISP PACKET (yes sometmes they are that dumb)
2 - fields are for horses! funny comment really - bridleways in UK are seriously limited, and many farms CHARGE us to ride on their fields (hundreds/yr)
3 - Roads=cars cyclists and horses actually
4 - If horse was to spook and go through the windscreen of car and injure or kill you cos you rammed up its arse at 60mph then you would deserve it for being an ignorant pratt
5 - do you think we WANT to ride on the roads?! some people dont have a choice - for example some injuries require horses only to be ridden or walked on sold flat surfaces
6 - if your car is damaged by a horse you can get it fixed - if our horses get hit by a car THEY DIE
7- your car is a mode of transport - 'thing' - possesion - our horses are treasured members of the family & for many a way of making their living
8 - with the UK's % of lardarses exercise should be encouraged, riding is one, if there are no bridleways or accessible off road riding in the area then YES they are more than entitled to ride on the road
9- as a rider [and driver] i hardly ever have to ASK anyone to slow down, cos they have a brain cell & realise my 1ton horse could do a hell of a lot of damage to their car! i always thank them,many stop on the lanes to ask if the kids can pet the pony

perhaps instead of moaning you could help campaign to your local council for more off road riding for horses.
i have ONE byway in my area - NO bridlepaths - i have to use 5 roads to get to the one byway and the entire ride takes about 45 mins - my horse is fit, she is an athlete, i need to ride her for a minimum 1 hour per day and atleast 1/2 of this should be on roads to strenghthen her legs for the demands of a 1 day event, hunter trial or cross country course.
How dare you people suggest horses shouldnt be on the road! listen to yourselves, my god! What a bloody dull life if there wasnt horse drawn carriages taken a bride to her wedding, or a tandem of black horses taken a body to be buried. both of which i plan to do when said days arrive....perhaps i shall have on the back of my hurse "HAHA youve had to slow down one last time!!"
