Information asked for in United States

When shopping in US I am amazed at how much information one is asked for. What is your name? What is your zip code? What is your address? What is your phone number ? And people all give it without turning a hair ... and yet they have identity theft and all the other worries that could ensue, i.e. people behind you who could phone/know you are out/ etc. etc. Why do Americans not baulk at this the way an English person would??? If you refuse to give it you seem churlish and odd.
