I think often very clever people are sharper than slightly duller folks but not necessarily unkind. I'd personally rather have both but if one over the other kindness wins every time x

Yes I do you complete loser.
Easy to be both!
well you can fake kind but you can't fake clever......equally you can learn to be kind but you can't learn to be clever.....so given the choice

Jim. I hope you are being humorous.
Well, that's for other people to judge, of course :P
I appreciate a fair balance of both attributes really.

Disappointed to discover I was lied to as a child - they said go to school and learn and you'll be clever.
Well I don't get it.

Is jim answering the question?
It's better for the rest of society if one is kind, better for oneself if one is clever.

Luckily I hit the jackpot both times !
I'm just t'ick.......
Watching my betting so hadn't noticed the change of order in the OP's header and the OP's actual Q.

Sneaky.
The two aren't related in any way, you imply you have to be one or the other - which is not clever
Why can't clever people be kind and why can't kind people be clever? The two are not mutually exclusive.

OP here. I personally think that it's better to be kind than clever. Clever but not kind equals Reese-Mogg or Johnson. Kind but not clever equals kind people. Who would you rather meet?
What about clever, kind people or kind, clever people?
but you have assumed that clever people can't learn to be kind.....
I don't think you learn to be kind. I think it's part of your nature, as is being clever. You can't learn to be clever either.
"you can't learn to be clever"

Pretty sure you can, actually. Start by reading books, maybe...

I suppose that my preference is to admire a kind person who may not be very clever; but to find distasteful a clever person who is selfish and unkind. Just a personal preference.

Jim F, reading books will not make you clever. reading books might make you knowledgeable but cleverness is an innate ability. You cannot learn to be clever.
